Skills to work in schools

Our courses will help you develop knowledge and understanding to work in primary, secondary and special-needs schools. Our courses include:

  • Teaching Assistant (Levels 1 and 2);
  • Education and Training Level 3; and
  • Training, Assessment and Quality Assurance (TAQA Assessors Award) Level 3.

Teaching Assistants (TAs) support children’s learning in the classroom. Our courses will give you an understanding of a TA’s roles and responsibilities. Topics include children’s learning in and out of the classroom, how literacy and numeracy are taught, how to encourage positive behaviour, and using craft activities.

Get started: At Level 1, you will learn about working in a school setting with a focus on how to support children’s reading, literacy and numeracy development.

Working with children: On the Teaching Assistant Level 2 course, you will learn about child development, how to support learning activities, and how to maintain and support communication and professional relationships with children. Courses include classroom teaching, school placements and observations.

Teaching adults: We offer Education and Training at Level 3 to get you started in your teaching career.

Learning with us: Our courses are in-person at a learning location, online or a blend of both online and in-person learning.

What our learners say

‘I hoped for a lecturer who would teach me at my own pace. They gave us a great lecturer who is very understanding and great at explaining.’

Nkosianna, Teaching Assistant Level 2 learner

Case study

‘Amazing tutor who is always willing to help you, being patient and pointing you in the right direction. I have learnt how to provide support for children and teachers in a school setting. Supporting the pupils in their learning sometimes on a 1:1 basis.

I am more confident in myself knowing if I put my mind to something, I can achieve it. I have met some friendly people along the way who are always willing to help including my tutor who is excellent at teaching in many ways, understanding that not everyone learns in the same way.

I liked how easy it is to enrol on the course and that is local to where I live.

Next I want to secure a job in a school environment putting everything I have learnt in to practice. I will go enrol on the Level 3 course to become an LSA (Learning Support Assistant).’

Charlotte Dedman, Specialist Teaching and Learning Services Level 2 learner
