We offer teacher training for teachers and aspiring teachers/trainers of adults and children, with part-time, flexible courses leading to national qualifications.

If you are interested in being a teaching assistant, this course is for you. You will develop your knowledge and understanding of various topics required to meet the support needs of primary, secondary and special needs schools. Topics will include children's learning in and out of the classroom, how literacy and numeracy are taught, how to encourage positive behaviour and using craft activities.

This Level 1 Award is accredited by NCFE

Function Skills English - Level 1 - this part of the course will help you develop your communication, reading and writing skills. You will learn to:

  • Prepare for and contribute to the formal discussion of ideas and opinions.
  • Present information/points of view clearly and in appropriate language.
  • Identify the main points and ideas and how they are presented in a variety of texts.
  • Write clearly and coherently, including an appropriate level of detail Use language, format and structure suitable for purpose and audience.
  • Use correct grammar, including correct and consistent use of tense.
  • Ensure written work includes accurate punctuation and spelling and that meaning is clear.

If you are interested in becoming a teaching assistant, this course is for you. You will develop your knowledge and understanding of various topics and the skills required to meet the support needs of primary, secondary and special needs schools.

The level 2 Certificate is accredited by City and Guilds and consists of the following units:

  • Children and young people's stages of development.
  • Safeguarding the welfare of children and young people.
  • Communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults.
  • Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.
  • Team building skills.

If you are interested in teaching, this course is for you. You will develop an insight into the role and responsibilities of teaching and training within further education sector. Topics will include teaching and learning approaches, observe and evaluate micro teach and understanding the use of assessment methods.

This Level 3 Award is accredited by City and Guilds and consists of the following units:

  • Understanding roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training.
  • Understanding and using inclusive teaching and learning approaches in education and training.
  • Understanding assessment in education and training.
  • To understand appropriate teaching and learning approaches within a candidate's specialist area.
  • To plan, deliver and evaluate micro-teaching session.
  • To observe and evaluate micro-teaching sessions.
  • To understand the use of assessment methods and record keeping.

This opportunity is open to anyone, of any age or background, who would like to and has the time to volunteer to run informal English Conversation Clubs for non-English speaking adults in the borough of Waltham Forest. We have clubs currently running in schools, children's centres, places of worship and community centres.

You need to have excellent communication skills, an ability to get on with a diverse group of people and be able to commit to supporting an English Conversation Club after the course finishes. As the course is accredited at Level 2 and you will be building up a portfolio of work, you need to be able to write confidently.

This course is accredited by Gateway and you will be working towards a Level 2 Award in Peer Mentoring.

  • How to support, manage and organise groups of learners who have English as a Second Language.
  • How to assess learners' interests so that meaningful and relevant topics are selected for conversation.
  • How to select appropriate and inclusive learning resources and materials for discussion.
  • How to evaluate and improve learning support practice.
