Umar applied for an apprenticeship job with the Revenues and Benefits department through the National Apprenticeship Service website.
He had just left school in 2009 with A-C grades and was looking for an apprenticeship, he decided that he didn’t want to study full time and wanted to start work, the only work experience he had was two weeks in a large chain restaurant and takeaway.
Umar came to see us in 2010 and completed the necessary paperwork and provided evidence to be considered for the apprenticeship, Umar needed support and guidance to prepare him for the interview and time was invested by the team in helping him to be work-ready.
Umar’s CV was sent to the Revenue and Benefits department of London Borough of Waltham Forest for their consideration and he was selected for interview alongside other applicants. Umar was successful and started the Level 2 Customer Service apprenticeship. Umar worked well with this department and enjoyed the challenges that came with it, at 17 he was working in the back office and was also interviewing clients over the phone and verifying evidence. Umar took his role seriously and applied the knowledge that he learnt at college to his role.
Upon completion, Umar went on to secure full-time employment in the Benefits Department, he developed his confidence and skills in an area that he enjoyed.
He joined the Internal Audit Team as a Team Leader and continued to study, completing the accountancy and internal audit qualifications. Umar also had the opportunity to manage an advanced business admin apprentice, supporting him through his role and providing valuable feedback to him progress.
Umar has now left the Council and moved into an excellent position with an American multinational financial services company. Although the team will miss Umar, we are all delighted that he has progressed so well with our help, proving that Council staff are truly world-class!
