Thameena lives in Walthamstow and is completing her apprenticeship at the Town Hall in Finance and Governance department.
Why have you chosen to do an apprenticeship?
I chose to do an apprenticeship as I believe it is a great way to gain a qualification while also getting some real hands-on work experience. I had been away from the world of work for four years while raising my daughter and felt an apprenticeship was a great opportunity for me to re-enter the workplace and learn from an amazing and experienced mentor.
Has the apprenticeship had an impact on your life?
The apprenticeship programme has had a positive impact on my life. I have gained lots of confidence both in the workplace and academically at college. This has been an amazing opportunity to build on my existing skills and learn new things.
What personal development goals have you achieved?
I have proved to myself that I am a valuable member of my team at work and that I still have the ability to achieve to achieve academic success by completing the written work that is part of my qualification.
What professional development goals have you achieved?
I feel like I have come on in leaps and bounds with my professional development at work, as I have learnt so many skills, built on my confidence and had the opportunity to network with other professionals both inside and outside of my own department.
What are some of the challenges you have come across as an apprentice and how have you overcome them?
The biggest challenge I have faced is finding the correct balance of juggling full-time work in a busy office with studying for a full-on qualification at the same time and having a busy home life. My manager, college tutor, assessor and my placement officer at the adult learning service have been a great support in helping me find a correct balance.
What are some of the skills you have gained during your apprenticeship?
I have gained new skills during with my apprenticeship placement and have especially developed on my communication skills, organisational skills, and interpersonal skills, as well as academic skills like essay writing, creating and delivering a presentation, Microsoft Excel skills and team working skills.
What is your progression route once you have completed your apprenticeship?
Once I have successfully completed my apprenticeship I hope to apply for job roles that are suited to my skills set and start building on my career. In the future, if the opportunity arises, I hope to look into further studies around management and leadership.
